WHY HAVE A VIRTUAL HOMECOMING?
Doctor Visits. Conferences. Award Shows. Riding Rollercoasters. Museum Visits. Just a short list of experiences that have pivoted to be virtual as a result of COVID-19. Everything sounds weird until you see it done the right way. Why shouldn't the place that invented homecoming pivot as well?
Homecoming is more than just getting together and drinking with friends, though we have many virtual weekend opportunities to do that - Thanks, Jack Daniel's. It's an opportunity for people who want to be surrounded by love, energy, excitement, memories, old friends and potential new friends, in engaging experiences that will give them a dose of what they didn't even know they needed.
In today's world, we're not going to remove that option for people. So, virtual it is. Plus, this helps us engage alumni wherever they are in the world to remind them why we go to Columbia, MO yearly. So hopefully, when we can meet up in person again (fingers crossed for 2021) this will encourage them to go and that Homecoming experience will be on another level. Going virtual is the answer.
WHAT IS #BLACKGOLDWEEKEND?
Since 2014, a weekend series of annual events has elevated the Mizzou homecoming experience for Black and Brown alumni, known as BlackGold Weekend. Annually, sold out, one-of-a-kind events and highly anticipated new traditions create an electric environment in Columbia, Missouri yearly.
In 2020, we're putting the home in Homecoming with virtual events. Because quarantine.
WHO CAN ATTEND #BLACKGOLDWEEKEND?
University of Missouri undergraduates and graduates (alumni) who are 21+ are the target for all events, but there are opportunities for other groups to join. The entrepreneurship panel on Saturday and social justice panel on Sunday are open to the general public. Take a look at the "Who Can Participate?" option under each event on the homepage.
WHO IS BEHIND #BLACKGOLDWEEKEND?
This weekend is for alumni, by alumni. This is a collaboration of Mizzou Alumni and businesses they are connected to. The motivational men's accessories line MR. SUITABLE (founded by University of Missouri alumni - Derrick Christian and Julian Davenport) is the source behind these yearly events and the presenting sponsor of the weekend. In partnership with MBAN (Mizzou Black Alumni Network), Brown-Forman brands (Jack Daniel's, Jack Daniel's Honey and Jack Daniel's Apple) and Chicago French Press premium coffee, the weekend is full of unique experiences to keep virtual audiences engaged.
WHO IS #BLACKGOLDWEEKEND FOR?
Primarily for 21+ people, especially Mizzou alumni, when we're in person in Columbia, Missouri for Homecoming. Since we're digital this year, there are two events where we're encouraging 18+ people to attend. Those events are the #BUYBLACKMIZZOU Meet-Up and Social Justice Sunday. Join the party!
WHAT IS #BUYBLACKMIZZOU?
We wanted a list of Black-owned businesses from Mizzou alumni and it didn't exist. So, we created it and named it #BUYBLACKMIZZOU and it went really well. Now we're building on that with a panel featuring names on that list during this virtual weekend. This way, we'll put names to faces. To view the list, visit: noirmizzou.com/buyblack
IS EVERYTHING VIRTUAL OR IS THERE AN IN PERSON ELEMENT?
Since there is this thing going around named COVID-19, you may have heard of it, we're making everything virtual. If you are in quarantine with a fellow tiger or loved ones, get them in on the action. It's just one free RSVP away.
SO, EVERYTHING IS FREE FREE?
Since it's virtual in a time where connection is more important that ever for the world and the Black and Brown people, we want this to be accessible, accessible. There is merchandise for sale here that helps cover the costs of the weekend. Plus you look great in return and you're supporting a Black-Owned business. So, we're all winners.
DO I NEED TO RSVP FOR EVERYTHING INDIVIDUALLY OR JUST ONCE?
If you are going to attend literally every event, you can RSVP here. If you will only be at select events, then you will have to sign up individually. Guests will have to sign up to receive the link to the version and important details. We won't spam you. We'll only share helpful info.
HOW CAN I SUPPORT?
Sign up for the events. Share with fellow Mizzou Tigers. Buy merch. Show up and have fun. Follow sponsors on Instagram: @NOIRMIZZOU, @MISTERSUITABLE, @MIZZOUBLACKALUM, @BROWNFORMAN, and @CHICAGOFRENCHPRESS.
I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS. WHERE DO I GO?
